Three years ago, ten baby cottonwoods hatched in
my cross flowerbed. On a muddy, snowy autumn day, Hubby and I dug up the little
saplings (average size, 10 inches) and transplanted them to the backside of an
alfalfa field where they would benefit from irrigation water and, in turn,
provide shelter to livestock and wildlife.
This is one of those transplants. One of the
leaders is about 8 feet tall, which is not particularly impressive.
But, upon closer inspection, we see evidence that the
tree is already fulfilling one of its primary purposes!
