I met a new duck today! Mergansers, mallards, pintails, and teal frequently patronize our place, but I can’t remember ever spotting a
Common Goldeneye here.
The regulars mentioned above are flighty species
which never let me and Bodie (the dog) anywhere near them, so I was surprised
that this duck allowed me and Bodie to watch her while she swam and dove (for
crawdads, I assume) in an open patch of water. Her composure and beauty were
not“common” at all!
