The diversity of Indian paintbrush amazes me. We found each of these plants growing in the same half acre of sagebrush desert.

Fred

Remember when Wings had her breech birth? Well, once the calf was safely born, Hubby lifted a slimy hind leg. "It's a heifer," he announced. 

The next morning, Hubby told me that he'd already named Wings' calf Winnie. 

"Yes. Wings had Winifred. Perfect," I replied. 

Perfect, except that Winifred actually turned out to be--you guessed it--Fred.

Kodiak

Before Mayzie had her first calf, I'd figured that if it was a cute little bull, his name would be something like Maynard. (Mayzie's mama is Daisy Mae; her grandma was our sweet Maezie, one of the first cows we brought here from Montana.)

Mayzie did have a cute bull, but he's neither little nor Maynard. He's Kodiak.

Pansy's first calf, Tulip, is so happy to be out and about!

Daisy Mae couldn't be more smitten with her little Smitty.

Nellie, Continued

Because the newest calf, like the youngest child in a family, naturally gets the most press....

Nellie

Annabelle has Nellie. 

Nellie's birth was rather dramatic. Her head was bent back, necessitating a good deal of careful en utero rearrangement before she could make her debut. 

Much could have gone very wrong during the process, but all went right. Thank heaven, little Nellie was no worse for wear and on her feet in no time.
